Bloody hell!

Environment Canada has issued a warning that Canada will face the coldest winter in 15 years.

I've already begun to feel the proof as the temperature outside right now is -15 degrees Celcius. This time last year it was still above freezing. Brrrr.

Proponents of Global Warming need not worry though. One of the lesser known facts about Global Warming is that as the rest of the planet gets hotter, Canada just gets frikkin colder. :)

Well pretty good, at least.

Received it this morning at 9:20 from Amazon. Installed it immediately with some hitches, but now all is fine.
Let me start by saying I purchased a full version of Ultimate, 2 full versions of Home Premium and 1 Upgrade version of Ultimate. The full versions installed without any notable incidents. The Upgrade version was a bit fussy. Not only do you need to have XP installed on the machine you are upgrading but you must also start the installation from inside Windows XP. There you are given the choice of upgrading of doing a clean installation.

A small hitch with my ATI Radeon X1600 video card in one of my systems was quickly fixed by downloading and installing the latest (01/28/07) driver from AMD/ATI site.

Now, all systems are go. It's only day one, so there still may be small problems popping up as I go, but I don't really foresee any since I ran both betas, both RC's and the RTM on all my systems over the last year or so.

So far, so good.

NSA, Microsoft Worked Together on Windows Vista Security

The U.S. agency best known for eavesdropping on telephone calls had a hand in the development of Microsoft’s Vista operating system, Microsoft confirmed Tuesday.

The National Security Agency (NSA) stepped in to help Microsoft develop a configuration of its next-generation operating system that would meet U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) requirements, said NSA spokesman Ken White.

This is not the first time the secretive agency has been brought in to consult private industry on operating system security, White said, but it is the first time the NSA has worked with a vendor prior to the release of an operating system.

By getting involved early in the process, the NSA helped Microsoft ensure that it was delivering a product that was both secure and compatible with existing government software, he said.

"This allows us to ensure that the off-the-shelf security configuration that the DoD customer receives is at a level that meets our standards," White said. "It just makes a lot more sense to be involved up front than it does to have the tail wag the dog."

The NSA’s involvement in Vista was first reported Tuesday by The Washington Post.

The NSA has provided guidance on how best to secure Microsoft’s Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating systems in the past. The agency is also credited with reviewing the Vista Security Guide published on Microsoft’s website.

Microsoft declined to allow its executives to be interviewed for this story. But in a statement, the company said it asked a number of entities and government agencies to review Vista, including the NSA, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Still, the NSA’s involvement in Vista raises red flags for some. "There could be some good reason for concern," said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC). "Some bells are going to go off when the government’s spy agency is working with the private sector’s top developer of operating systems."

Part of this concern may stem from the NSA’s reported historical interest in gaining "backdoor" access to encrypted data produced by products from U.S. computer companies like Microsoft.

In 1999, U.S. Congressman Curt Weldon said that "high-level deal-making on access to encrypted data had taken place between the NSA and IBM and Microsoft," according to EPIC’s website.

With Vista expected to eventually power the majority of the world’s personal computers, it would be tempting for the government agency to push for a way to gain access to data on these systems, privacy advocates say.

The NSA provided guidance on Vista’s security configuration, but it did not open any back doors to Windows, White said. "This is not the development of code here. This is the assisting in the development of a security configuration," he said.

While the NSA is best known for its surveillance activities, the work with Microsoft is being done in accordance with the NSA’s second mandate: to protect the nation’s information system, White said. "This is the other half of the NSA mission that you never hear much about," he said. "All you ever hear about is foreign signal intelligence. The other half is information assurance."

I've been watching and reading for a while now. I've concluded that JU is comprised of 3 to 6 people and then me.
The others all suffer multiple personality disorder and insomnia. Their various personalities argue with each other all for my enternainment.

I suppose I should say thanks.

Just noticed this problem today.

When clicking on the Download link for a Windowblinds skin, SP2 pops up a window asking if you wish to Open or Save the file. Also, the file has been changed from the familiar .wba extension to a .zip extension.

If you choose to Open the file then Explorer opens the file as a .zip showing all the contents of the file. However, the convenient instant download and install does not happen.

If you choose to Save the file then the file is downloaded and saved to a location determined by you on your hard drive. However, it is saved as a .zip file, not a .wba file.

For whatever reason SP2 keeps identifying .wba files as .zip files on the WC website and worst, when saving them it converts the .wba extension to .zip.

Once the file is saved on your hard drive as a .zip, the only way to install it is to use the Add button under Display Properties/Appearance tab.

P.S.

When using Stardock Central to download WindowBlinds files the .wba extension is preserved, and will install automatically if you choose to.

Have been sitting around recovering from a hernia operation for the last week and half. My wife picked me up a book to keep my spirts up.
The book is called Non Campus Mentis and is a compilation of college student essays by Professor Anders Henriksson.

It is quite hilarious how the world's history can be so mangled.

Here are a couple of funnier bits:

Medieval Times:

"During the Middle Ages everyone was middle aged. People lived in or near the soil. Most were kept busy sewing the crops. Surfs were dentured and bonded to the ground. In times of crisis the serfs would seek refuse in the lord's castle."

and another,

"In the 1400 hundreds most Englishmen were perpendicular. A class of yeowls arose. Revolters ran apluck. Women were nowhere to be found. Martin Guerre, a French pesent, did not even seem to care if his wife produced a hare."

Now on to the Renaissance...

"Henry VIII divorced his original wife, who had become old and impregnable. Elizabeth I was eventually the daught of Henry the Ate. Mother to Elizabeth was Ann Beau Lynne, wife of the moment to Henry VIII. As queen, Elizabeth was the foremost monarch of the Elizabethan era. In 1588 she calmed her soldiers during a Spanish attack by assuring them that she shared a stomach with her father."

....and a few funny bits about the explorers....

. Balboa was first to lay down his eyes on the Rocky Mountains.
. Dick Cavett was the first European to visit Newfoundland.
. Cabot discovered the Netherlands and codfish.
. Captain Cook found many continents while deliberately on exhibition and located the perfect navel spot near Africas's bottom."

And then came Modernism....

"Friedrich Nietzsche was a German movie producer who wrote Triumph of the the Will and Superman."

"Culture fomented from Europe's tip to it's top. Art plopped off the deep end and sailed up the creek without a paddle. Cubism, splatterism, etc. became the rage."

And leading up to the The Great War....

"The German takeover of All-Sauce Lorrain enraged the French, who clamored for vendetta."

"The Russian revolution of 1905 began about 1907. Unfortunately, the Czar was easily influenced by flutterers. The Triple Alliance faced NATO. This too was produced by Bismarck, who worked for Caesar at the time."

And then there's recent history....

"North Africa is the region which lies in the northern part of Africa. It is therefore not in Africa. Without a dout this was the Middle East, where all bets were misplaced. Arab leaders ran head in tail with the Soviets."

"One major source of conflict since World War II has been Israel's relations with the Parisians. The Carter administration found itself face to face with this problem during the so called Iran Hostess Crisis."

"East and West made mends with each other. The Berlin Mall was removed. Many Eastern Europeans experienced a new form of arousal at this time."

And there are more and more. I have not stopped laughing.

Pick up the book if you get a chance.

Recently needed a new system as the old one died. Decided to see if I could build my own (love a good hobby), and at the same time keep it inexpensive. Used my local ''''Mom and Pop'''' Computer parts stores (there are three in the area), to piece together the system. Here are the results:

Motherboard w/L/V/S onboard(MSI) 65.00 CDND
Celeron 2.8 (Boxed) 165.00 CDND
WD 40g HDD (OEM) 75.00 CDND
LG CDRW (OEM) 40.00 CDND
RAM King.Tech 512MB 135.00 CDND
Refurb Flatscreen CRT Monitor 80.00 CDND
ATX Grade C Midtower w/350w PSU 30.00 CDND

Total 590.00 CDND

That''''s Apprx. 430.00 USD
or
596.00 Aus. Dollars
or
243.00 U.K. pounds.

(Used the Bank of Canada rate to convert)

Fortunately, I was able to install my copy of Windows XP on the new system although I did have to activate over telephone, but they were ok about it.

Compared prices with pre-built systems. The only systems I could find that were close or a bit better in price were those awful e-machines. At least with the system I built I know what''''s in it. And, if the future calls for it, the MSI motherboard is upgradable to an Intel P4 3.06 gig. processor.

Post here with other ''''cheapo'''' systems. I''''d like to know, by comparison, how I did.

Oh yeah!, I was able to salvage the keyboard, mouse and speakers from the old system.
